they're very naughty and they jump over their desks and hit each other. I want to take control, im really new at teaching and im substituting now. is it hard to take control after the students has seen through you as a 'nice' teacher?
shouting and telling them what to do... well some dont listen to me and theres this one kid who mocks every teacher who talks to him. What shoud I do? I dont want to take them to the principle's office. i want to handle it first on my own. i have to.How do you control a class of fourth graders?
keep them busy with something they could relate with. Make sure that your lessons are planned in such a way that you consider their attention span... most kids in that level have very short attention span. Engage them in activities that they will find useful and interesting. Try the active learning method of teaching. With active learning, you will keep the kids occupied with meaningful activities. If they are engaged, then they will have no time to misbehave...How do you control a class of fourth graders?
http://www.newmanagement.com/index.html You need to go to this website. Rick Morris has some amazing classroom management ideas! I have implemented one of his ideas called ADOPT in which I carry a clip board and I keep track of the behavior of each student, but do not verbalize the warnings. The number of marks they recieve designates what the consequence is. (i.e. 1 is a warning, 2 means no ticket for raffle, 3 is a 10 minute (recess) detention, 4 is a lunch detention, 5 is a referral) once the students see that though have to control their own behavior, that clip board it like a magic wand.

I have the same problem - pupils see me as a teacher who doesn't want to confront them.
I'm getting better. My advice is: don't be afraid of the principal's office.
Find out, and double-check with someone, so you are 100% what the procedures in school are. And then stick to them.
I find when you meet a new class it's hard to be really firm the first time they misbehave because you don't want to alienate them but...that's when you need to set the tone for the rest of your time with them.
I'm going to email you; please read it!
i would use rewards for them try and find what their interested in. If he mocks you just ignore him and carry on teaching as for the jumping over the desks maybe you could teac them a practical lesson that they can move about in they will then think you are a fun teacher but you are actually just getting them to behave hope this helps good luck. x
I have taught for almost 30 years.
Take control. Start over. Be mean. Be strict. It is always easier to let up than to start out nice.
They have to see you as the authority figure.
Otherwise, you will not teach anything.
The kid who mocks: give detention. Take away recess.
If you have to keep the whole class in, do it.
Threaten them or offer to give out candy to the better students
extra homework? give them detention?
