I am a new teacher this year. I am teaching a class that has a few students that like to get attention and disrupt my class. What can I do to keep them in line or discipline them. One student is always trying to be loud and disruptive. Maybe someone knows of ways to keep them focused or under control. My class is getting out of control at times!!!!! Help!?
First of all, try not to raise your voice. I know this is hard to do but trust me it will work. When the class gets too loud, in a soft voice say ';If you can hear me clap once.'; Make sure you are close to a student when you say this. Once the student claps, two things will happen. First, the other students are going to wonder why that kid clapped and they are going to listen. Second, you are going to say quietly, ';If you hear me clap twice.'; Repeat until you have everyone's attention. This works with all grade levels and adults. The more you yell, the louder they will get to drown out your voice.
Now for the individual children. There are different methods that can be used depending on the age of the child. For Kindergarten - Second grade I use a color code. Each student has their name on a library pocket which is located in an area easily accessed by the children. Each envelope has 4 strips of colored paper in it; green , yellow, orange, and red. When a child breaks a rule, like yelling out, he or she must get up and change their color. If the child ends the day on red, then a note is sent home or a phone call is made to the parents. For older students, make friends with a teacher that is close to your room. Inform the students that if they break a rule they will receive a strike. After 3 strikes, they will be sent to another room to finish their work and they will have 10 points taken from their paper. If the child is sent out, a note home or a phone call home will be made.
The most important things are to be consistant and to be firm. Don't give in when a child cries and call administration or security if a child refuses to leave your class. Always follow up with the parents and let them know that you mean business and you will not tollerate the misbehavior. Remind the parents that you have a responsibility to teach everyone in the class and you cannot be disrupted by a child's misbehavior. My class is getting out of control at times!!!!! Help!?
For the children that like to be loud and disruptive, have them come up to the front of the class, and ask them to teach the class. Make them stay in front of the class. It isn't something that most kids like. they want the attention, but not complete attention from their peers. When they are forced to in front, they change their minds and will sit down. Never send them out of the class, that is what they want.
i don't know what grade level you are teaching but when that group acts up first warn them saying ';this is it I've had enough of your disruptions in MY classroom you are being disrespectful to me and your peers who are trying to learn, the next person that acts up will get sent to the principals'; and if the act up again you HAVE to follow through with what you said and send them to the principals this is so they know you are serious and what your capable of.
