How can i control an esl class of 35 or more students?

i work in korea and have an advance beginning level class that often talk and help each other too much while im trying to instruct them. what is the best way to get them to not help each other and to stay quiet while im working with one groupHow can i control an esl class of 35 or more students?
As your statement indicates you don't want all your students to work simultaneously. The purpose of group work is not that while teacher is working with one group the rest of the class/groups should stay hanging. Instead you need to develop some ground roles so that student should follow like talking in low voice so that other groups should also not be disturbed. Moreover, you need to give instructions properly before to start any activity and to expand the impact write it on the board as well as as some students in different groups to be ensured they have understood what they need to do.

Remember that we need to encourage students-students interaction as students know their LANGUAGE much better than the teacher, so can help each other too. Therefore a teacher should provide such a situation where dissemination of knowledge/information to accrue.

If you develop some ground roles in the class with the help of students, I am sure you will not worry then about student who help each other but really enjoy that students are getting the responsibility of their own learning.

Furthermore we need to remember that the purpose of teaching/learning should/must not be only developing students' content knowledge but enhancing skills, improving attitudes and strengthening values that are core goals of education.

Patience is very important. Sometimes games will work to keep them occupied, if it something competitive. If you have a multi-level class, having the higher level students help with instructing the lower level students sometimes works out.
Use a system of rewarding..... such as a ticket store where they can buy small candy and cheap toys with their tickets or something such as FUN FRIDAY where you give them ten tickets at the begining of the week (or whenever) and they lose tickets for not being good and they must have ten tickets to get into FUN FRIDAY! Good Luck.
You poor, poor man.
