Well well, a first time offender and such a serious charge to boot! In NY it seems entirely possible that your friends are looking at about 2 years to 10-15 years, that is what is so difficult to figure sentences, the US has ';roaming'; sentence ranges where Canada's are set. I do know if they'd have done it in Canada they'd get less time and HAVE to be released at 2/3 of the sentence to a halfway house.
the guns are good for a year at Rikers no matter what. Since they want to play hardball and go to trial, expect anywhere from 20 - 30 years since they have a simultaneous possession of drugs and firearms.
